Salon des Refusés

FUGUE/Salon des Refusés

A HAPPENING IS HAPPENING…

I am excited to announce and invite you to a collaborative performance and event on December 2 at 7 PM. Please RSVP here, spaces are limited. Honored to be collaborating with John Niekrasz, and Lee Wilmoth over the course of the last 18 months. Many thanks for my Salon des Refusés materials to master perfumer, Christophe Laudamiel and Fumerie, the West Coast’s finest perfume shop.

Fugue: As whole-bodied artists we are often isolated from our senses, in particular the sense of smell due to the exclusionary mechanisms of scent institutions. This project, among others, is designed to collectively dismantle the ecology of the scentiverse. Perfume becomes garbage, garbage becomes a catalyst and scent returns to its native space through the alchemy of music, movement and plants. Audience participation with their written words is critical as their words become patterns in the vibration of movement and sound. Silence is not an option for this exercise.

Reclaiming our sense of smell through an interdisciplinary meditation feels urgent. Scent as a cultural construct is specialized, decorative and utilitarian. We are hoping to move scent into a more necessary, community oriented and porous communications channel through this exercise. As with scent this exercise will be ephemeral and necessarily transform and vanish.

Salon des Refusés: There is a long history of using poor materials in art, where often the abject is the most effective communications tool. The care and keeping of the garbage for this project serves as an homage to the continual editing process artists must use: we must destroy in order to create and often have not thought deeply about the ideas and materials we throw away in the name of progress or completion. Unboxing of the garbage is a direct response to the vapid unboxing of perfume that is done with a nose in capitalist culture and mind fogged with ignorance for what art is.

This evening will also feature art projects by:

Banana Phone (video installation)
Midnight Variety Hour (MVH) current members include Maura Campbell-Shun, Sean Christensen, Fern Wiley, and Lee Wilmoth

Briseida Pagador (poetry)
